The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) delegation, led by Mr. Fahad Butti Al Muhairi, Director of Safety and Prevention, participated in a number of meetings as part of the G20 summit events in the host nation of India.
The participation, which came in part of the Sherpa Track on the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG), aims to highlight the UAE’s achievements and efforts to applying the Sendai Framework requirements, and showcasing the best practises in the country at the summit, in addition to contributing to formulating the outcomes and directions of the G20 parties in the Disaster Risk Reduction field, while underscoring the UAE’s preparation to host the 28th edition of the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC “COP 28” later this year, and the UAE’s impactful and active role in climate efforts. The participation also aims to exchange expertise and empower global cooperation.
Under the Indian presidency of G20, the DRRWG this year came under the theme “Transformation From Disasters Management to Risks Management”, in addition to setting five priority areas for the working group that includes: Global Coverage of Early Warning Systems, Disaster and Climate Resilient Infrastructure, Financing Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, Disaster Response System, and the Ecosystem-based Approach to DRR.
Both India and participating nations praised the UAE’s role and contribution to regional and global strategies in all that is related to adequate response to Crisis and Disasters, and its implementation of the National Strategy to Reduce Disaster Risks.
During the upcoming period, India will submit a detailed report on the outcomes of the working group meetings as well as implementing an action plan that aims to focus on reaching a roadmap agreed upon by members of the G20 to address priorities, while announcing final recommendations during the 18th Summit of the G20 which will be held in New Delhi in October.
