The National Emergency and Crisis and Disasters Management Authority discusses cooperation in the field of disaster risk mitigation with the United Nations

H.E. Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Hosani, Director General of the National Emergency and Crisis and Disasters Management Authority, discussed mutual cooperation, expertise exchange and partnership in the field of preparedness and disaster risk mitigation upon receiving Mr. Sujit Mohanty, Chair of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction - Regional Office for Arab States, in his office in Abu Dhabi. The meeting was also attended by a number of directors and officials from both sides.

The two sides discussed the programs, policies and frameworks that aim to develop strategies for mitigating risks associated with disasters and crises and achieve the desired sustainable development goals. Additionally, they discussed the UAE’s efforts in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 being one of the leading countries in the field of risk mitigation.

The two sides also considered supporting the country’s efforts in “My City is Getting Ready” campaign which aims to create role model resilient cities that are capable of dealing with disasters and crises.

Mr. Mohanty addressed the results of the meetings held as part of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction which was organized in Geneva recently, and discussed how the Authority might be able to take advantage of these results to reinforce the emergency management system in the UAE. The meeting also addressed the possibility of holding some of the conferences, meetings and events that the Regional Office for Arab States organizes on the international level.

Furthermore, Mr. Mohanty commended the role that the UAE plays in implementing local and international foreign aid programs in areas where people deal with emergencies and crises, as well as its contribution to preparedness to deal with such situations through a leading national emergency and crisis management system in the region.

He also praised the UAE’ capabilities and potential, as well as the plans, development programs and projects it implements in the field of infrastructure, basic services and urban and residential development which equipped those institutions with the capabilities to deal with risks and threats effectively.
